SEVEN IN-A-ROW; CAMPANELLI STADIUM NAMED LEAGUE’S BEST
Rox home field wins Best Playing Surface Award for seventh consecutive season
Brockton, MA (September 8, 2008) – Campanelli Stadium (pictured), home of the Brockton Rox has been named the Can-Am League’s Best Playing Surface, as announced today by the league. The award is voted on by the eight field managers and media representatives of the respective teams.
“Campanelli Stadium is a beautiful ballpark and our Head Groundskeeper Tommy Hassett pours a significant amount of time and effort into keeping it a gem in the league,” said Rox General Manager Brian Voelkel. “We are proud to have earned this award and maintained a level of excellence for seven straight seasons,” he continued.
Campanelli Stadium opened its doors in 2002. It is one of the biggest ballparks in the Can-Am League going 320 down the left and right field lines, 404 to straight away center, and 410 at the left-center field wall. The stadium is named after Alfred Campanelli, a successful businessman who donated $2 million to the City of Brockton to be used for the makings of a project that would help the citizens of Brockton. In turn, the city used that money to help finance the building of a baseball stadium for the Brockton Rox.
Tommy Hassett has been the head groundskeeper at Campanelli Stadium since it opened in 2002. His crew consists of Frank Cronin, Frank Baez, Charlie Vella, Ned Cassidy, and Tom Curran. Prior to working with the Rox, Hassett, a veteran of field maintenance, worked in the XFL in its lone year of existence, in Newark with the Newark Bears of the Atlantic League, and for 17 seasons with the Salt Lake City Gulls and Trappers.
